| July 1st, 2021

Zinc Omadine® antimicrobials are a family of products that offer an effective broad spectrum biocide for the preservation of products against spoilage from fungi, yeasts, algae and bacteria. The products contain an active substance more commonly named zinc pyrithione (ZPT) and are available as powder and aqueous dispersion. Formulated products with ZPT to solve specific problems are also available.

What is this active substance called Zinc Pyrithione( ZPT)?

ZPT has been used safely for decades in a variety of personal care applications such as in anti-dandruff shampoo. There are two approaches to solve an microbe problem, treat the symptoms or tackle the cause. Like in the case of anti-dandruff shampoo, ZPT acts by killing the germs causing the problem & preventing the symptoms from recurring.

This same technology has been used in a solving a variety of problems for customers under our You Protected™ initiative.

Typical Applications

These products are equally effective as a dry-film preservative or as a bulk additive for:

  • Architectural and industrial paint and coatings.
  • Construction materials including flooring adhesives, caulks, sealants, grouts and jointing compounds.
  • Building materials including ceilings, ceiling tiles, walls and internal partitions.
  • Textiles including apparel and home textiles.
  • Thermoplastic polymers such as PVC, silicone, polyolefin, polyurethane and acrylics.
  • Plastics applications for the control of mildew and bacteria in carpeting, carpet underlay, cushion and mattress foam, athletic flooring and mats, components of footwear and sponges.

Getting the Best of Both Worlds: Textiles Illustrative

Usage of ZPT in textiles is an example of its versatility. Its usage in textiles gives the consumers all they can ask for in terms of their microbial control needs. The textile industry uses cotton or synthetic materials like polyesters, etc. Cotton based fabrics make a great choice when it comes to comfort and superior perspiration management. For these reasons, cotton fabrics are ideal for undergarments and the sock industry. Synthetic materials such as polyesters and its blends have found their niche in several segments like sports active wear due to stain & wrinkle resistance, durability, etc. Regardless of fabric types, applications that see moisture and humidity conditions are ripe for bacteria and fungi growth. This microbial growth leads to unpleasant odors and can also lead to stains on the fabric. These stains, also called “pink stains”, are from the excrete products of bacteria and are permanent in nature. Use of bleach products could kill the growing microbes, but also cause permanent damage to clothes. This is where ZPT technology has come to the rescue — it prevents growth of the bacteria without damaging the clothes.
